Denim. It’s an ever-lasting fabric that can either make classic looks or cheap looks. However, with the right accessories, it doesn’t have to be isolated to the bottom half of your outfit.
Shake off the dust from your denim jacket, take it to the tailor and get it refitted. Denim is back baby and she is tired from sittin’ in the corner! (please tell me that you ladies got that Dirty Dancing reference!)
Here are 8 looks from Skinny Mom that put the Canadian-Tuxedo to shame:
This is similar to the idea of putting a “menswear blazer” over a super-girly dress. You just want to make sure the proportions are balanced and you don’t over-style. Instead of going with a heavy blazer over a form-fitting dress, loosen it up. Pick a denim button up to relax the look.
Now, let’s reverse it. If you had a very flowy, printed dress you would want to add structure and go for a more fitted-look with the button-up or jacket. Find one with more tailored lines and use the “tie-in front” approach for the button up.
Rockstar. You have to have that confidence to pull this look off. But, don’t be afraid of the leather! Because of its clingy nature, finding just the right size and cut is crucial.
The denim shirt is slouchy, but tucked in, which allows more body-types to pull it off. Tucking the loose shirt in is a really great way for bigger busted ladies and even hippy-er gals to accentuate their form.
Sometimes the frumpy, boyfriend top look is hard to pull off because the form is lost. Accessorize funk with simplicity. Either choose a fringy purse/lace up shoe and go minimal with jewelry or reverse it and totally rock out with beaded bracelets or tiered necklaces. But do not try it all together. This is supposed to be very edgy but also effortless. As for make-up, choose the same approach: bold lips or bold eyes.
Again this is an edgy, effortless look. But this is way more casual then the leather, so keep it minimal.
Rather than the lace up heels, keep the shoe frump-tastic and flat. Buckles and “undone” laces are the perfect compliment. However, watch your height proportions. If you are short, keep the boot close to the ankle, the higher the boot the shorter you are going to look.
It should look like you threw the outfit together, so keep the hair down and a tad untamed. But, do apply some mascara and a little lip gloss to polish it. You want the natural glow.
Now the fit for the oversized button-up should be loose no matter what your body shape is. However, the cut of the shirt is important. Bustier broads, make sure the fit grazes your torso. It’s very easy to actually look scrubby in this look or twice your size if the fit never comes back in!
I’m a sucker for a good print. But, streamline your look with the louder prints. This distressed top totally works with the striped shorts because the strips are thin and not as busy. The busier/bolder the pant, the simpler the denim.
That doesn’t mean you can’t make statement with the details! If it’s a super busy print, the denim should be simple in wash but, it could have funky pockets or buttons to play off the pattern. You can totally use distressed denim with most prints, but just make sure it doesn’t get too washed out—that’s where it starts to get very Billy Ray. Modernize it with crisp metals and the chunky watch with a cat-eye for make up.
Such a fall classic! Try a slim-fit denim button up and tuck it in to a higher-waist short for a very collegiate look. This combo is more about texture than anything else.
Sheer tights keep it simplified. But, adding wool and cotton accessories make it fun. Play with the contrasting textures like crushed velvet shorts, tweed, etc. but make sure everything is in the same hue or color scheme.
Be careful when you start to try lace tights or patterned black tights…it can turn Pretty Woman {pre-90120 shopping spree} very, very quickly. That’s why the knee-high socks are a consideration! They totally pull this look from the street to the university.
Yes, yes, yes! You CAN make denim on denim work. For the most flattering look for every shape, go with a dark wash jean and a distressed or white washed, denim top.
This is about contrast in the wash over contrast with the fit, style or really anything else! Color pops are a must to complete the look as intentional and “on-trend.” The classic scarf with matching nails work with the red-ish, camel brown heels. The heels really make this outfit seem chic. It’s a perfect day-out look!
Combine the contrast between washes and textures to balance the skirt and denim outfit.
Lace and floral prints look great with lighter washed denim tops. Play off the multi-textured look with various kinds of jewelry: silver and gold, bangles and cuffs! Think eclectic and eccentric!
Any wash looks great with the white pant or short…even skirt! White is so clean that you can truly pick the look you want based off the denim.
Distressed or aged makes a cute day contrast and dark and clean-cut would look great with colored statement pieces like orange bracelets or even an animal print heel! Have fun with this one!

I do love denim, but some of these looks are not modest at all…. as Christians, I feel at times, I might not have the most stylish look, but Jesus has called us “to be in the world, but not of this world.” Sad to say, I expect more of the Christian women’s blogs I follow and am sad sometimes by what I see….
