A couple mornings ago I heard loud squealing coming from SJ’s room.
It was only 5:45 am . I glanced at the clock…then the monitor to see a crying baby…then back at the clock.
5:45 am?
“Really, SJ?” {I think I said out loud}. I was not ready to get up.
He usually doesn’t cry when he wakes up. He typically will play for at least 15 minutes before he starts yelling “Maaaaaaaaa!”
But when I looked closer at the monitor I could tell that he wasn’t crying out of frustration that someone hadn’t rushed in to wish him “good morning”. I could see something was wrong.
I sprinted as fast as I could from our bedroom {on one side of the house} to his {on the opposite side of the house}.
When I busted through the door he had his leg stuck between the crib bars. Not just kinda stuck. He had his fat little knee stuck.
He’s got his foot stuck before, but never his knee…and never so tight!
I tried for 3 minutes to get it out…all the while he was screaming bloody murder. I wanted to yell for J to come help me, but he had already left for 6 am crossfit.
I started to almost panic. I was beginning to think I may need to call my dad to come over with his saw and take his bed apart!
I ran to get some water and luckily after another minute or so I was able to free his leg. Olive oil was next on my list if the water didn’t work.
This is what his poor little leg looked like…
…swollen, red, and already bruising.
Scared the living crap out of me!
Now I’m paranoid when he’s in his bed. Has this ever happened to one of your kids?
I already have a crib bumper, but he just kicks his legs over the top of it.
Christine says
That happened to my daughter a few months back and we though about bumpers. She didn’t have them but I figured unless I doubled them which
Amy says
Omg that’s crazy. Same exact thing happened to us this morning. Olivia was making noise but not screaming. I found it odd she wasn’t standing when I looked at the monitor. I went in and found her thigh caught up to her hip. She screamed bloody murder as I tried to get it out. She’d never done that before. Silly kids!
Mandy says
Oh wow, crazy! I’m beginning to wonder why they make cribs with bars that babies can stick limbs through? LOL!
Christine says
Would have more risks it wouldn’t help thankfully it hasn’t happened again. And Aquaphore/Vaseline worked great.
Mandy says
Aquaphore/Vaseline…never even thought about that! Maybe I should store some right by his bed “just in case”.
Crystal says
I’m so sorry to hear that happened!! That looks like it hurt really bad. Poor SJ!! I hope he’s feeling better very soon!!
Sarah says
Poor buddy ๐ could you put a breathable bumper on top of the bumper you already have?
Elle says
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe those would be more difficult for him to slide down even if he puts his leg over it? Poor thing!
Amanda says
Awww, poor little duffer!! ๐ Hope his little leg isn’t hurting too much today. Oh, and I hope you get a nap to make up for the super early rise! Haha! xoxo
Carey says
OH Poor baby!! And scary for mommy!! ๐
Tawny - Glamorously Mommy says
Oh my! One of my girls did the same thing, but they didn’t get a bruise. That’s crazy, poor baby!
Cate says
Poor SJ. Hope he is recovering now.
Felicia says
Alex did it once. He learned not to do that again. LOL!! I don’t know why they don’t make the bars closer….then again it took forever for us to move the bars closer to stop kids from putting their HEADS through the bars so maybe in 20 years we will move them even closer. LOL!!
Diane says
Poor guy! I’m sure that scared both him and you a lot! Hope he’s all better!
Danielle says
I read this last week when you wrote it, and thought “hmm, I’m surprised Noah hasn’t done this.” Of course, this morning, after putting him down for his morning nap, I hear a wretched scream/squeal and run in to see his little leg stuck between the bars. I used olive oil to get him out, but he’s got a line of bruises across his chubby little thigh. Poor baby!
Mandy says
Oh no!! So scary isn’t it?! I am so glad olive oil worked! I don’t understand why the crib bars aren’t made closer together! I am glad he is okay! Kisses for him!
