Otherwise titled “My P Man is Growing Up”.
I mean, really, when did my baby get so dang big? He’s old enough to pick out his OWN room decor?? This seems so incredibly wrong to me.
Thankfully, he trusts his momma’s decorating skills and only had one {actually two} requests when it was time to update his room to “big boy” style…
…A CHALKBOARD WALL AND A 42″ FLAT SCREEN TV.
Small demands from a five year old, wouldn’t-cha say?
The chalkboard wall was quite easy. And cheap too.
The 42″ flat screen?
Who does this kid think he is!
I didn’t have a 42″ flat screen tv in my bedroom until 3 years ago.
I’m hoping his next request isn’t a pony because I clearly can’t follow through on that one.
Ahem.
For now I am hoping the Mr. Stiltz {the giraffe} is good enough.
I adore this picture {taken by KPP} hanging on the left as you enter his room. It captures his personality to a tee!
His bedding is Dwell Studio Transportation.
I really like that it’s modern and boyish at the same time without being superhero-y.
I’m not hating on superheros. Or maybe I am.
My dad helped me create this wall art {inspired by Pinterest of course}.
Click HERE if you want to see the tutorial on how I did it.
One of my favorite parts of his room is his school desk. This past year they tore down my old high school to build a new one. They decided to auction off EVERYTHING inside and this little desk is a gem I got at the auction {for like $15}.
Now hopefully I will be able to get him to do his homework at it.
This piece of wall art is another DIY canvas project by me. Similar to my first canvas tutorial, but this time I used a fun transportation stencil! You can find the FULL tutorial here.
I forgot to mention that the cute cubby thing {holding all my son’s “friends”}…also made by my dad.
We painted it white, but trimmed it out in a light colored wood. Love the contrast!
I found this wall stencil on Etsy by searching growth chart wall decal. You can find the exact one here.
This chair has been a save-all! I ordered it from PBK and my son uses it EVERY single day.
Mainly to watch his lovely 42″ flat screen. 🙂
I really need to update this picture of P when he was one grabbing his fat belly, but I just can’t bring myself to do it yet. I’m waiting for him to insist that I take it down…but until then…it shall remain up!
There you have it! P’s bedroom re-do…big boy style!
What do you think? Any suggestions on what I can add?

Cute! …but you are nicer than me, I will never allow a tv in my kids rooms.
Mandy says
It was definitely something I thought I would never do…but it is nice to let him watch tv in his room (quietly) every once in awhile! We do have “tv rules” though! The tv MUST be turned off by a certain time…he has to get permission to watch tv….etc. You get the point! 🙂
Gina says
Super cute. My kindergartener does have a superhero room. No offense taken..I like them and all but I get sick of them too. 😉
Mandy says
Trust me…when Bents needs a room re-do I am positive he will make me do superhero something! 🙂 I secretly do love Spiderman. Ha!
Lacy Campbell says
Super cute.. I’m jealous we don’t have a tv in our room. I want one but the husband doesn’t. lol
You are so creative..
Mandy says
We absolutely never watch the tv in our bedroom. Parker does use his frequently though. It’s kinda nice to let him watch tv quietly in his room every once in a while. 🙂

We are currently doing my little mans room as well, and I love love everything about this! Its calm and simple and very big boyish. My son asked for a green room and I just cringed, but I love this green. I am going to have to steal your look 🙂

Super cute!!!! Love all the bright colors. We were going to do a chalkboard wall in the playroom…until I gave it up and made it an office/craft room. Ha!! I may have to find a way to do it in one of the kids rooms though.
Mandy says
It is definitely fun to let the kids draw on it…but just today…I found out that Bents doesn’t know the difference between chalk and crayons or chalkboard wall and regular wall. 🙂

VERY cute room! I always had a TV in my room growing up, but my husband didn’t. I don’t know what we will do for Landon when he’s older lol
Kerri says
I love that room! You are so creative, and I am very impressed with your Dad’s carpentry skills lol. We put a TV in our kids room this year and I never thought I would do it, its really nice thought to let them have some quiet time and watch a Barney while I take a minute to regain my sanity haha.

It’s Dwell Studio and I ordered it on Amazon!

That is a gorgeous room! I mourned a little when I found out we were having a boy instead of a girl {no cutesy sparkles?!} but now the more I see others decorate for their boys, the more excited I am to have a boy. The bright colors are wonderful.

I love that you got the desk from the old high school. Love P man’s new room.
sarah says
Cute room! Was the chalkboard wall easy to do? I’m afraid it may turn out smooth.
Diane says
Oh Mandy, I just LOVE Parker’s room! This could seriously be in my house – I need to email you a picture of Rhys’ room. You took the words out of my mouth when you said that “it’s modern and boyish at the same time without being superhero-y.” We were very against doing a “theme” room for his nursery and had already had this Dwell set picked out as a possibility for whenever we do a big boy room. Great job, thanks for sharing all the deets!
Tonya Roberts says
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Wishing my boys were little again so I could copy it! So very cute!
P.S. I found you from the “Behind the Blog” chat. What a cute family you have! I love your taste in decorating!

Looooooove it! I want to take every single piece and use it for Xander s room! Well… except the TV, X is only 2. Seriously, really really want that room at my house!
Lynsey says
Mandy!! It’s gorgeous.. err.. manly. 🙂 I am dying over the transportation canvas. I’m pretty sure my truck lovin’ son would die if he had this in his room. Can’t wait for the tutorial. Parker is one lucky guy to have such an awesome room!
Erin V says
This is just the cutest room! I love the modern look! Please share where you purchased the transportation stencil to make the canvas art! I must copy this!!
Jaclyn Armstrong says
I love every little detail in this room! Great job!

I randomly came across your blog and thought your home was gorgeous. Then saw your son’s room and had a huge smile on my face! Just this summer we redid my son’s room to go from cute toddler to kindergarten as well. He had a sea theme when he was born, turned that into pirates with a few modifications. Well then he had a street sign passion so we ended up with the Dwell Studio Transportation bedding as well. I love what you’ve done with it and the brown accessory pillow looks great! We went with aqua and orange on the walls, it’s bright and cheery but sleek with the bedding set. Hope your son enjoys it as much as mine does!
Monica says
I love this room. I’m in the process of making over my sons room and I’m borrowing some of your ideas…
One question…Did you do moulding all around the window also or is the only moulding separating the chalk wall. Thanks for all the great ideas!!
Mandy says
Thanks! The moulding on the window is the orignal trim that was on the windows when we built. We just added a piece of trim to separate the chalk board wall from the top half of the wall.
Angela says
Please tell me where you got the 6-cube book shelf next to the bed.
Mandy says
My dad built it. Sorry, I know that doesn’t help you!
Erin says
The canvas you made with the stencil is so cute! Where did you find the stencil at? I need to make one for my son’s room!
Ashley says
LOVE this room!! Were getting ready to do my boy’s room and I am in love with the green you chose!! Do you have the name of it?
Great job!
kim says
You are going to regret having the TV in there, because it gets really tough to monitor TV usage as he grows up and that happens FAST!! Soon the video games will takeover and they will drive you nuts and make him an addict to gaming!! Also with cable/satellite, there is just too much CRAP on it that you will have a hard time controlling what he sees, he will watch it at all hours (yeah, they get sneaky) and then he will be so tired for school! Besides there are so many better ways to spend his time….toys like legos & playmobil, bikes, balls, swimming, building stuff; ACTIVE play and learning! But the room design is awesome……
Jennifer says
I love this room and double love your decorating skills! I’m in the process of redoing some rooms in my home, and I wish I had your skills! Awesome!
I tried to resist, but I must comment in reply to the above comment about you will be regretting your decision about the tv. I’m not HUGE fan of tvs in bedrooms, but I’d never tell anyone else their decision is wrong. Just because you (person who left that comment) had those issues does NOT mean everyone will! My son is 18 and he did get a tv in his room when he was around 10. He still would rather come watch tv with us, he has NEVER gotten addicted to gaming (had a game system he used sometimes, and ended up selling it) and I’ve never had to worry about his choices of what to watch because we have taught him right and wrong. He may have made a few bad choices at one time, but he learned from them. He’s never been too tired because he stayed up late watching tv/playing games. I’m very involved in my kids’ lives and what they do, and I do monitor everything to a point, but you have to let them make some decisions on their own. Your comment sounded very judgemental due to your experience…but your experience isn’t the same as everyone’s. I don’t regret for a second having a tv in my son’s room. My daughter is almost 8 and she doesn’t have one yet, but if/when I feel it’s time, I’ll make that decision again. Allowing a tv in your child’s room doesn’t make you a bad parent (yes I know you didn’t say that, but it was kind of implied), nor does it necessarily make for kids as you described. I’m sure Mandy’s son gets PLENTY of active play!
Sorry…that comment just bugged me too much to let it go!
Cassidy says
LOVE THIS ROOM! My son’s room is orange and brown, but I have been kind of stuck for a while. I can’t seem to find my final vision and the middle is kind of- blah (do you read YHL? haha). Thank you for jump starting my decor in his room again! 🙂
Angela says
I just ordered bedding from Dwell Studio as well! I assume this is a duvet cover as well (i didn’t notice that they sold actual comforters) so if it is, what blanket did you put inside?
Sherrell says
I LOVE this room! I am looking to redo my 3 year old sons room and I am shooting for something fun like this. He has chair railing on his wall though. Any suggestions on how I would paint. Also, where did you purchase the giraffe? What is the name of the curtains that you purchased from Target. Thanks again!
Lisa B. says
I came across your blog via Pinterest. I love this room re-do! I have been thinking about what to do with my 2 year old’s new room (recently vacated by his older brother who has decided to spread his wings and fly – at 18 years old..they think they know it all..) so the room sits in its vacant state from the previous occupant..waiting to be made over. I may just borrow your idea..I am sure my little man would love it!

Can you post the link for making the wall art above the bed please? When I click on the one on the page it takes me to something different. I’m wondering the picture and frame sizes along with how you made the outer frame and its demensions. Thank you!
