First thing: we are approved in iTunes. Yeah! We would love for you to subscribe and leave an honest review if you have time. Check out the Dollars and Roses podcast HERE. Thank you in advance!
In this session of Dollars & Roses Podcast, we go over TONS of blogging mistakes that we have made in the last five years and how you can avoid those mistakes all together.
There’s a ton of information out there where people are sharing their success stories and things that have worked for them, but there isn’t much about the mistakes that they have made along the way.
We hope that by sharing some of our mistakes, you can learn from them and hopefully benefit your blog by not making the same mistakes we did.
I guarantee that after you listen to this, you’ll probably have a ton of ideas about what you SHOULD NOT do if you are a blogger.
Cheers to learning from our mess-ups!

I was interested in the lovely home decor from the houseofrose but found myself to be a lot more intrigued with building a blog and possibly make some profit out of it. I have a deep passion for DIYs, interior decorating and showing off my creativity but I . I have been avoiding things like the SEO because it seemed complicated but you really helped me understand it. Now I’m on your blog almost everyday even re-reading some of the things I have missed and since I have subscribed to your Newsletter things like this post have really made me research a lot more into it and hopefully I could understand it fully to help others as well. Just wanted to say Thanks a bunch! You guys really helped a lot!

Just subscribed! Good luck with the podcast!

Hey guys, I noticed Jeff sounding very echo-y on the podcast, more so than Mandy. I think you’re using a Yeti mic? Which means it’s probably a condenser mic which picks up alot of ambient noise and makes it sound echo-y. For a cheaper alternative, there’s this mic under $40, http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR2100-USB-Cardioid-Dynamic-Microphone/dp/B004QJOZS4/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1377104432&sr=8-7&keywords=audio+technica+mic
and the sound quality recorded through Garageband is much cleaner because it’s a dynamic mic. This means it picks up sound ONLY on the front of the mic for a much better sound for voice. I got this info from the Cliff Ravenscraft of the Podcast Man and use it as well. Just a suggestion! 🙂
Jeff Rose says
@ Megan Believe or not, we’re actually using that mic (we have two) with a mixer and it still came back echoey.
We think it’s the room that we’re recording in and are planning to make adjustments going forward. Thanks for the tips though. I’ve definitely needed all the help I can get launching this podcast! 🙂
Megan says
Ohhh, hmmm my bad, have you tried using the podcast templates and filters on garage band? I have a screenshot of my podcast template for that “right-in-you-ear-sound” perhaps you could compare with your own set up? http://www.bellsandbounty.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Screen-Shot-2013-08-21-at-12.15.42-PM.png Anyways, I hope that can help out the echo-ness. Great to hear you guys on the podcast!
Jeff Rose says
@ Megan Boom! Thank you for doing that. We’ll definitely refer to this when we record our next one.
You rock!! 🙂
Chris says

Jeff Rose says
@ Chris We plan on it. 🙂 Thanks for listening!

Woo! I haven’t visited in a while and I was excited to see 3 podcasts! I love to listen to podcasts while I take long walks around the neighborhood (otherwise I’m trying to multitask and can’t focus on it) so I’ll have to add yours to my list.

You guys are doing a great job. Just curious, how much time passed from the time you wanted to do a podcast to the time of your first one? How involved was the process to get approved by iTunes? What plugin do you use for your social share buttons?
Jeff Rose says
@ Beth I came up with the idea of doing a podcast in January of this year, so over 8 months to get it launched. The initial hangup was getting the right equipment. After that was just figuring how to do it all. There’s plenty of tutorials on the web nowadays that I really have no excuse. Just didn’t make it a priority.
Getting approved in iTunes was the easiest part of the process funny enough. I think we were approved in 24 hours.
We use the “Flare” plugin.

Podcasting is a great idea, but you should have text as well for those of us who don’t have 50 mins and just like to scan so that we can get right to the good stuff.
Jeff Rose says
@ Vanessa. Love to but it’s just not cost effective for us to pay to have it transcribed right now. We do plan on having more bullet point summaries of future podcasts.
Either way, thanks for listening and checking out our blog! 🙂
Beth says
8 months, that’s impressive. I know Pat Flynn talked about waiting more than 2 years to launch a podcast.

Just listened to this today and I LOVE it! Lots of great tips (or non-tips?). I also love the combination of a woman blogger in a women’s niche, which is very different from the typical male oriented, SEO focus. Something for everyone. Awesome!
Jeff Rose says
@ Danielle Awesome! So glad you found us and like what you see/hear. 🙂
