If you are intimidated by moving your blog from Blogger to WordPress. Don’t be! I promise you (and yes, I will pinky promise) it is NOT that hard. For a very easy tutorial on how to move your blog from Blogger to WordPress you will want to watch our video below. My husband will make you want to slap yourself for waiting so long to do this. Yes, it is THAT easy.
Here is a quick recap of the steps on how to move your blog from Blogger to WordPress in case you want to reference them as you are going through the process!
Step #1: Purchase your own domain and have WordPress already installed before you start this project.
If you missed our tutorial on how to do that just click here. Gosh, can we make it any easier for you? 🙂
Step #2: Log in to your new WordPress site at http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin and go to ‘Settings’.
Under ‘Settings’ click on ‘Permalinks’. The ‘Default’ is usually checked. You will want to select ‘Post Name’ instead of ‘Default’. Click ‘Save Changes’.
Step #3: Go to ‘Tools’.
Under ‘Tools’ select ‘Import’.
Click on ‘Blogger’
Click ‘Install Now’
Click ‘Activate Plug in’
Click ‘Authorize’
Click ‘Grant Access’
Step #4: Find the ‘Magic Button’
Click ‘Import’
Click ‘Continue’
You can set your authors if you have not already done so. When you are finished click ‘Save Changes’.
And that my friends…is IT! For real.
Now go transfer your blog from Blogger to WordPress. Hurry along.

Would this work if you’ve already bought a domain name through blogger?
Wendy says
I soooo have been putting this off – but this is gonna get me off my tail and make me do it! Thanks for the information!! Now wish me luck!
Lena Gott says
Should you do this when you very first set up the site (meaning, will these posts override your existing WordPress posts) or can you consolidate a couple of blogs into an existing one at any time without screwing up your existing WordPress site?
Jeff Rose says
Ooohhh….I’m not sure. I would lean towards at the beginning when the site is new. Personally, I’ve never tried to consolidate multiple blogs into one WP site.

Question: I don’t know how to ask this correctly but I’m gonna try and hopefully I won’t totally confuse you. I have a blogger site now. After I get my own domain name and switch to word press how will people that read my blog regularly know this? Will it automatically redirect them to my new site if they put in the old blogspot domain?
Jeff Rose says
No, unfortunately not. There may be a way to do this, but I’m not sure how.
I would just have an announcement post on your Blogger blog letting them know where you moved to. Eventually they’ll catch up. 🙂

Why is it better to have a blog through WordPress over Blogger? I am getting ready to start a blog and can’t decide between the two. Also, is it really important to upgrade and pay for the .com option instead of just having the free domainname.wordpress.com?
Jeff Rose says
@ Kate Personally I’m a fan of 1. Owning your own domain. 2. Having a WordPress blog.
You can always go the free route, but in that case; it’s not yours. To me building a site/blog is building your own baby. If you have a sitename.wordpress.com site, you don’t own it and I don’t like that.
Plus there is a certain persona that goes along with not owning your own site. To me it gives indication that 1. You’re a new blogger 2. There’s a chance that you won’t be blogging that long or taking it serous. These are my personal thoughts but it’s based on experiences of what I’ve seen with people that start new blogs.
Joy says
Jeff,
I puchased my domain through blogger I think? I have a .com so am I still able to make the switch over to word press??
Thanks! Trying to get my site up to date and start using it to drive fans and $$!
Jeff Rose says
@ Joy
Yup, it shouldn’t be an issue. I’m pretty sure the files would transfer over the same way. Let me know if you have any issues.
linda says
I already own a domain name that I am currently using on blogger. How would I make the switch to wordpress if I wanted to use the same domain name?
Jeff Rose says
@ Linda Just like the directions show. It’s a bit complicated, hence why I hired Jesse to do it for me.
Paige says
When buying your domain through GoDaddy.com do you recommend paying extra to protect your personal information?
Jeff Rose says
@Paige I did at the beginning of most of my sites, but kinda regret it now. Keep in mind that I used my business address so I didn’t care if that was public. I would do private if I were listing our home address.
