I can’t tell you how long I have wanted crown molding, but it’s been a LONG long long time. There is just something about crown molding that makes everything look nice and crisp and clean and complete.
Nice – Crisp – Clean – Complete – are all music to a type A girl’s ears. Me likey.
Here’s the thing…crown molding is one of those cost-cutters that you can easily eliminate when you are building a home. It’s one of those “projects to be added later” things.
When we built our home 2 years ago I would have loved to tell our contractors, “Yep, we want crown molding!” Unfortunately it was one of the things on my “wants” list that had to be shelf’d until a later date. We don’t own a money tree and we definitely weren’t working with unlimited funding.
Fast forward until just last week…and I can now say that we have our crown molding. In most places.
And I’m drooling.
Of course this is a project that was designed and completed by my dad. I’m sure that just shocks your pants right off. Ahem.
He started off by painting it…
…and using this miter saw to cut the corners. I think this is when he started cussing me.
We didn’t have one 90 degree corner in our living area. EEEEK! Good thing he’s a smart cookie. He had to figure out each corner on his own.
We used two pieces of trim to get the look I wanted. One piece of thick baseboard and a piece of more decorative crown molding.
One of the challenges that my dad was facing…how in the heck would he hang this stuff alone? Without a second set of hands to help hold the board up while he nailed it in place.
And so he created this nifty little piece.
A long stick that would reach our 12 foot ceilings. He wrapped the end in a washcloth so it wouldn’t scratch the wall or trim.
My job? To help hand him the trim pieces…
…and then use the nifty little stick to help hold the trim in place until he could get nails in it.
That dad of mine is kinda innovative huh?!
I don’t have any finished pics yet because it literally JUST got finished! I will work on getting some soon!
My dad was barely done hanging the last piece of trim when outta my mouth came….“By they way (dun dun dun), I have this board and batten project I want to do…”
I think I got the eye-roll.
Oh me and my non-stop project list. Do you still love me dad?

Mandy, I love the molding!!! So beautiful. I like your wall color, too. And I’m also drooling over your high ceilings!

Mandy, would you mind sharing your trim paint color? We’re building a house now and there are a MILLION different shades of white! For the walls, we’re also going with Hot Stone by Valspar. Thanks 🙂
Mandy says
I honestly am not sure what the contractor used for the trim. I think it may be ultra white, but I can’t say 100%. The Hot Stone is a great color! It’s a little darker color (not too dark)…but just so you know. It’s hard to tell in pictures. We used Lamb’s Ear throughout most of the house and Hot Stone was one of our accent colors.
