There is one space in my entire house that I let get super-duper messy…can you guess which room?
My thought process is that the kids need at least one spot where they can be kids. Where they can let loose. Play. And be crazy. Errrr, be crazy without getting in trouble. Because let’s be honest…they be crazy all the time.
On some days it looks like the roof was lifted off the house and it rained Tonka Trucks in there. Actually most days it looks like that. And I’m ok with that. Of course, for the photo shoot I did a HUGE clean up and I almost broke my toe on a spiderman figurine in the process. Gah.
This is their space and they have my permission to play Magna Tiles, dinosaurs and Power Rangers all at the same time…without someone yelling in their ear to clean up. <—–ME
We love hanging their art on the wall each week. It’s fun to see them get so excited about clipping it to the hook for the world to see. It also gives us something to do with all the paint and coloring projects they bring home. They each have 2 hooks and they get to switch out their art about once a week.
This room is open to the dining room and so while I wanted it to be playroom-ish…I also wanted it to flow with the rest of the house. That way when I pick it all up {which is rare} it at least looks like a bonus room not just a room full of too many toys. Plus, I HAD TO HAVE THIS RUG from RugsUSA. You know my obsession with area rugs is quite uncontrollable. Ahem.
My dad built this play table for the boys for Christmas this past year. I almost bought one at Land of Nod, but after having a heart attack when I saw the price…I hit up my pops do create a replica. Dang he’s good.
I will say this… the natural light in this room makes me ridiculously giddy. It’s one of the main reasons I decided to change the paint color from dark brown to light grey. It just feels so bright and happy now!
I’ll often take my laptop in there during the day and work in the sunlight.
The kids still love to destroy ALL of our rooms in the house. So I’m not gonna lie to you and say they ONLY play in here. But I will say they play in here a good majority of the time.
Especially in the winter when we can’t go outside to play. Y’all, if you have boys… winter is the devil.
Let’s talk about the red couch for a second? The red couch is the first “big girl” couch I ever owned. Apparently at the time I liked boldness. I remember my dad telling me that I would regret buying a bright red couch.
But I must honestly say…I still like it. And I can’t get rid of it. Ha! It seems perfect for a playroom, right?
*UPDATE: I’ve sold the red couch since writing this post. Bahahaha.”
I used to be all anal about my baskets on my built-ins matching and being organized. But I got over that real quick when I realized it was too hard to keep track of what went where.
All I care about now during “clean up”? That you can walk through the room without breaking your toe on a plastic army guy. So if that means they throw cars in with trains and superhero figures in with Legos and dvd’s in with books… So be it.
I pick my battles wisely. Some things aren’t worth the stress. Can’t I get an AMEN?
Do you have a room in your house dedicated to the craziness? Please tell me you’ve almost broke your leg tripping on a Lego?

I absolutely love all the art/pictures in this room!
Nicole says
Love your playroom! It seems like it will grow nicely with the boys as they get older too. I pinned it for the paint color in particular – it’s perfect!
Where are the drapes from?
Mandy says
Thank you! Kohls!
Kristin says
Very nice! We’ve been working on our playroom going on a year and a half, and I cannot WAIT for it to be finished! It has been a fun process, though!
MJ says
What a nice playroom!
What did you go for to replace the red couch? (loved it, btw)
We have a pretty small playroom (this is France, tiny country, tiny rooms lol) but we just put up the storage solution last week, so the boys are still excited about keeping it clean… so indeed they will continue cleaning it everyday… not ๐

I love the canvas with all the alphabet letters. Did you make that? Or where did you buy it?
Mandy says
Thanks!! It’s from Hobby Lobby!
Tiffany @ A Touch of Grace says
This is the same color scheme I want to do in our playroom. I love that alphabet canvas!
Your dad is a genius when it comes to building things. Lucky lady!

Bahh! I’m always drooling over your furniture and excitedly scanning the source list daydreaming about completely copying your beautiful rooms then my dreams are dashed when I see they’re the work of your dad. I see only two possible ways to resolve this issue: 1) he can adopt me (I threw this out there a couple months ago. Maybe you’ve warmed up to the idea?) or 2) he starts a furniture business. It’s a crime to deprive us of his beautiful work! ๐ In all seriousness, the room is gorgeous. My kids seem to think the entire house is their playroom so I should get to work creating one special place to contain the chaos.

I love the look of this room. I would eventually like to turn our basement into a playroom but I need my boys to be a little older before I want them downstairs.

Love your playroom. We have a rule in our house: playroom can be messy all day, but before bed time it needs to be cleaned. This is my kids responsibility. My kids are 8,6 and 4 years old. They have bins/baskets of different colors and they know what bin is for what type of toys. They are doing very well on following this rule ๐
Mandy says
Smart!! We try and do that to…some days it works and other days not so much! LOL!
Lindsey says
I LOVE this! Can you tell me where you got the hook thing for the artwork? I am wanting something similar for our playroom.
Debbie says
Can you post the latest photo with your new couch in the playroom. I’m curious what color you went with. I’m always hesitant to put an area rug over the carpet. I like your choices of rug designs.
Heidi says
Can you tell me the name and brand of the color on the walls. I’m looking for the perfect grey!
Mandy says
It’s listed at the bottom of the post! ๐

Love this color scheme. We are getting ready to make a playroom area in our new house and I’m loving your ideas. ๐
Cat @ MaryMarthaMama says
We sadly do not have a play room but we do hope to have one in our next house! I’ll be pinning yours for inspiration, it’s so much fun. What did you get to replace the red couch?
Kristin says
Great post! We are in the process of transitioning our guest/storage room into a playroom. I love the idea of my kiddos having a space that they can pull every toy out at once and know that Mommy won’t have a panic attack…I’ll just close the door so I don’t have to see it! ๐ Love the canvas, “I can go anywhere with a good book.” I tell my children that all the time and so far they all love to read.
Nicole says
Love it! Where did you get the art wire clip display thingy?
Mandy says
Oh, that came from IKEA! Best invention ever!
Nicole says
Another question – I love the look of the rug. In your picture it appears to be a nice crisp white with navy blue. However, I have ordered rugs from rugs USA before and the white always seems to be really dingey and more of beige than white. Would you say that the white is a true white and the blue is a navy?
Mandy says
I would say that our rug is more of an navy and cream!!
Sarah Jacobs says
That chair is TDF! I hurt my toe so bad on a Lego. I had asked my son to pick up before bed (ha!) and was walking across the floor in the dark when BAM! It got me. It was practically embedded in my 2nd toe and took a piece of me with it when I retrieved it. Feel better?

I LOVE this room! We have my old office converted into my 3 year olds playroom. I was pulling my hair out constantly picking up toys EVERYWHERE. Now, they have a home ๐ Behind a nice closed door! Of course, the playroom is a nice aqua with pink accents. Did I mention it is a 3 year old boy haha! I thought MAYBE one day I could convert it back, so I am still hanging onto my colors!!
the cape on the corner says
my gosh, that light from that giant window! no wonder you go in here to use your laptop. you sold the couch-what did you replace it with?
Lauren @ Bless'er House says
So fun! I cannot wait to tackle our blank canvas of a playroom. Pinning this for inspiration (and maybe some motivation too).
Megan says
Love this playroom!! what did you replace the red couch with?? Do tell!! Thanks for showing us playrooms can be cute and useful at the same time!
