THESE….
…ARE GONNA BE THE DEATH OF ME!!!
My child is STILL obsessed with his binky! I am trying desperately to ween him….but he is making it really difficult.
I try and ONLY let him have it when it’s “nite-nite” time. It was working for a few weeks…until recently…when he decided that wasn’t good enough.
Yesterday morning, we had a MAJOR binky meltdown! I mean MAJOR people!
He was not stopping until he got his binky. THIRTY LLLLLOOOONNNNNGGGGG minutes of tantrum-ness! He even started telling me he wanted to go “nite-nite” just so he could get it!
Once I put him in his bed and gave him the binky he just started screaming to get out of the crib. But, the second I got him out and took his binky off…it was back to screaming for the binky. What a lose/lose situation.
Finally, daddy came home and we put him back in his bed (per his non-stop requests again for “nite-nite”)….he layed down and said “tummy hurt”. He did a mighty fine job of pretending he didn’t feel good. It was actually believable because he had a belly ache the night before. So, of course, I started feeling terrible and decided…”oh just let him have his binky out in the living room if he doesn’t feel good”.
The second I said it was okay for him to have it and come back to the living room…..he started busting out laughing! Really? Did I just get played by a 2 year old?
I think I did.
Any experienced mama’s have ideas on how to get rid of the binky obsession?

My husband took his to the little toy store in town and “traded” it for a toy. The check out lady played along. When he asked for it his mom told him that his binky was gone, he had a toy instead…..don’t know if it’d work for you, but it did for him. I think they made the plan to make the trade and talked about it for a week before so that he could make the decision when to go.

We had trouble taking Matthew’s “passy” away from him as well. Finally we worked it up that he needed to give it to his baby brother after Daken was born. We made it a big deal, and Matthew became excited to give his “passy” to Daken. When Daken was born, Matthew gave it to him (so precious). He actually found another one that night and used it to help him sleep, but that was the last night of the “passy.”
As for getting rid of Daken’s, he dropped it out of his stroller, and I said, “Oops, you lost it.” He wasn’t happy, but understood that that was it!
Give it to your dog, I hear that works too!
Good luck!

Neither of mine used a binky. PD sucked her thumb, but only when she held this piece of soft cloth that she called her Papoo. {These stories are so hilarious, aren’t they?}
Anyway, she sucked her thumb long enough for me to bribe her with a piece of jewelry – sapphire ring!~ I think she was 6 when this event took place. So I guess my suggestion is bribery, but he may be too young yet. Don’t worry. He’ll give it up! I cannot imagine that little doll throwing a tantrum 😉 xoxo

Oh no!! How funny but I know not really funny at all. I am jsut waiting for this day acuse it will be the same way for me I am sure. Brody loves his MAM Pacis!! I dread this day!!
Ya know.. I have heard this from friends and they have done it to wean their children.. but they say to cut the end of the paci off so when they suck on it it’s not the same and then they won’t want it? It’s worth a shot!!

kate is also two and still uses one. she LOVES it and would use it 24/7 if we would let her. some people have told me to ‘give them to santa or his reindeer’ when Christmas rolls around and tell them that Santa’s reindeer ‘needed’ them…like leave them out with the cookies. but right now it’s not looking like anything is going to work with her. she is obsessed. as long as she gives them up by the time she starts school! haha!

Well I had the same issue with my oldest – my other two wanted nothing to do with them. McKenna had to have a least TWO at a time..yes two. She would suck on one…and then rub the other one on her legs – arms – tummy. It was terrible….I tried on certain days using the signs junk like that…..never worked…I took them all, but she had others hidden all over the place……….seriously………..every where, and I didn’t have a clue to where they were!!! She had it bad. She finally gave them up – I cannot remember the age – but when she did…she would take her fingers…like she was still holding her binky…and rub and tap like she still had it…..sigh – every once and a while I will catch her playing with her belly button – that is one of the places where she would bounce her binky….it was a rough journey!!!!!! All I can say to you is GOOD LUCK!!!!!! (btw – McKenna is 12) Habits are hard to break.

mail it away (just wrap it up and drop it in the mailbox) or tie it to a balloon and let it go and then put a present in the mailbox or say that the binkie fairy brought him a gift…we did the latter w/ the whole 9 yards…glitter for fairy dust (that I swear Im still vacuuming up) but it worked, so worth it….do it before you see your pediatrician and you get specific instructions to do so, that’s a lot worse!

Fun reading the strings. My son was so attached to his pacifier that it started to become a real problem. We could not go anywhere without making sure that we had a pacifier in hand. My friend absolutely raved about the bye bye binky method so we decided to give it a try (she found it at http://www.bye-bye-binky.com ). All I can say is WOW, worked beautifully for my son with no tantrums, not even one! Super easy and four days later he had no interest in his binky. We really were amazed… highly recommended… Amber
