I’ve only be decorating for Christmas since well, before Thanksgiving. In our house, that’s no crime. I love all things Christmas and this year, once I discovered this thing called a “slim tree” I could barely wait to get all the holiday decor out and up.
Maybe you’re a little bit behind the game and just now getting in the Christmas spirit… or maybe you really never decorate because you just “don’t know how”… Ohhhhh Momma. I’ve got the easiest Christmas decor tips for you.
If I can do it, so can you.
Let’s start with the best invention ever, this thing called a “slim tree“. Apparently I’ve been missing out, because cramming a huge tree into our living room with three little boys constantly playing ninjas and practicing their “whip and nay nay”… we umm, run out of space to say the least.
Tip #1: Know your size limits and stick with them!
Having this slim tree has been the solution to basically all my life problems during the holidays. Slim tree = the path of running ninjas remains free and no ornaments go flying off the tree. Double win.
Tip #2: Keep a color pallet for your tree’s ornaments.
Maybe some of you who follow me on Instagram (@houseofrose) saw my little post about how I feel when it comes to elementary school sings. God bless. I need a Starbucks to survive that 60 minutes of precious children’s voices. And I feel about the same when it comes to tossing every single ornament my boys have created over the years onto the tree.
Hear me out, I love my boys homemade ornaments they bring from school, and there’s a special place for those, but it’s not on our main Christmas tree.
This year, we kept it all gold, silver and white.
Tip #3: Layer your tree skirt.
Call me crazy, but I layer my clothes everyday and I like to layer my Christmas tree skirt. Here’s the trick, make sure you’ve got one about 4-6 inches wider all the way around than the other. One on top of the other, and done. Adorable Christmas tree skirt.
Tip #4: Replace all your regular throw pillows with festive ones.
Whether you’re grabbing a few small gifts at Target, Home Goods or World Market, the Christmas pillows are all over and they are all kinds of adorable.
I’ve been collecting a few each year and now, we’ve got pillow perfection when Christmas comes! (P.S. – Get yours for next year after Christmas for like half price too!)
Tip #5: Keep it simple with matching stockings.
I love seeing all the fun and crazy patterned stockings this time of year in stores, but we keep it super simple, everyone has the same stocking with their name monogramed on it. Bonus, many online retailers will offer free monogramming this time of year.
Likewise, I keep it simple with matching stocking holders to sit on the mantel.
Tip #6: Decorate so your kids can still be kids.
I love seeing all the amazing tablescapes on Pinterest of the most elaborate and festive dinning tables, but let’s keep it real, with three boys, that would never work.
So I’ve compromised, keeping all the decor to the center of the table with plenty of room for little boys to do homework or play cars.
The key to this I think it to just “shop your own house”… I use the same burlap runner and these silver candle sticks year round, just add some greenery, pinecones and berries for Christmas. Super easy!
Tip #7: Don’t count the garland out.
Gone are the days when garland is all green and looks like my Grandma’s house. I got this little FA-La-La-La garland at TJ Maxx for next to nothing and it fits perfectly draped over our entry way mirror.
For the Mommas, the entry way seems to be a safe place for us to add a few of the more breakable decor items each Christmas. From candlesticks to snow globes, I love how festive our entry way is when guest arrive this holiday.
Merry Christmas!

Your home is beautiful! You have decorated it to perfection! I love the tree, and the decorations on it are perfect. All the pillows, the snow globe with reindeer, and your Christmas signs, are items I as well would like to have. I have to say though, my favorite thing in your pictures is the simple sign that says, “pray … always and often.”

I will just come clean…I haven’t decorated for the holiday-it’s still Thanksgiving in our house. I am hoping to get the old decorations taken down and at least the tree put up by the weekend. Work has been so crazy, I definitely thought I would have done more in our first year at our new house but some things don’t go as planned.

I love that you mention a slim tree because we’ve had one for the last four years! It started out because we lived in a tiny apartment and didn’t have room for a full-width tree. However, even though we have plenty of space now, I still really love the look of the slim tree! It makes the space still feel open even with the extra decor.
