As I was looking through some old pictures I found this picture of P and I playing football together. If I remember correctly we were watching daddy play football at our church’s fall football league 2 years ago.
P always likes to “pretend” that he is just like daddy and since daddy was busy playing in what he thought was the NFL {church football league is far from the NFL – ahem} someone had to play with P Man.
That left me.
I was never in to sports much. If I am being honest with you…I don’t even really like to watch sports on tv. I may pretend here or there that I am rooting for a specific team, but that’s all just to sound cool to the hubby.
Maybe it’s because in college when I was on the dance team being at every basketball and football game was MANDATORY. Then when I was in graduate school I had an assistantship in athletics and I worked at EVERY sporting event the school had. So when I finally grew up and was no longer being told I “HAD” to attend a sporting event…I didn’t. And it felt freeing!
But now that I have three boys, three boys that love sports, I am realizing that I have to set my interests aside and start finding joy in the things that they love. Even if that means it’s sports.
Look at me in this picture. Is that really how you are suppose to prepare for a catch?
P Man’s form looks nearly perfect.
Mommy’s? Not so much.
But what I love about looking back on this picture is the JOY. The fun that I am having {and more importantly the fun that P is having} doing something that is completely not on my list of “interests”.
I find myself beginning to like things that I never liked before all because it’s something that my children like.
What about you, do you find joy in things that you never thought possible all because your children love it?

can you do a post on your diet/fitness regimen? i don’t have children so i don’t have an excuse not to be as cute/fit as you! but i am sure there are other momma’s (of one, two, or three) that would love to know what you do to stay fit! just an idea 😉

I also pretend to root for a team. I mean, I have to be a KC Chief’s fan by default, but really I just like eating chips and dip and taking a nap during the second half. I’d much rather watch TLC or Lifetime than football any given Sunday, honestly.
Sometimes I even try to talk about the game Monday at work like I knew what was going on, then someone starts really getting into it and I’m like “Sorry, in over my head here. I was just making conversation.” Haha.

Another great and insightful post. Isn’t that what true love looks like. Getting joy from putting someone else’s needs above your own. Your boys are going to look back at times like these, the small moments, and realize what a great mom they have!

I never played sports growing up. I had three sisters and we were all in dance. Still when I prayed for kids I prayed for God to give me boys. I wanted to experience something different. God sure gave me what I wanted with two rough and tumble boys who love all things sports.

This is such a sweet photo….and P does have the perfect form! But friend, if you were on the dance team, you have to be athletic….. perhaps you didn’t play a particular sport, but still athletic! And if nothing else, you are out there playing with them AND you’re surely the cutest mom on the block. So there is always that!
I’m eager to see what Jackson is interested in…. I’m assuming all the typical sports, but we’ll see. It’s going to be so much fun!!!!!!!!

That is such a cute picture! A great mommy and son moment! (I think that picture would look great blown up and hung in his room!)
When my kids were little, 2 boys and 1 girl, they all played soccer. I didn’t know anything about the sport but I was there kicking balls around the front yard with them all and cheering the loudest at all their games! I miss those days!!

Just wanted to say that I love your blog. Thank you for sharing this bit and pieces about your family. I don’t have any children yet but this is one lesson I will file away.

I have been asking myself the same question. A mother of all boys makes you re-think what “fun” is. I, too, danced in college and remember being at ALL of the sporting events. I would rather find other things to do then watch sports on TV. I think its SO important to invest time into our children and to make memories. I know that shopping and coffee dates can only happen so many times and I need to start doing things that they want to do.
Thanks for the reminder!
