A few weekends ago my husband participated in a “Tough Mudder”. ELEVEN miles with 22 different obstacles and LOTS of mud.
I think there is part of his military side that enjoys getting dirty and being crazy.
Me? Not so much.
Nothing about this….
….intrigues me. Why on earth would you ever CHOOSE to get that dirty. Yuk!
I did; however, go and support him while he CHOSE to get that dirty. The race was about 2.5 hours from our house so we went up the night before with some of our best friends, Tom and Kelly {and Baylor too}.
We wanted to break Baylor in to “all things dirt and mud” at a very young age {5 weeks to be exact}.
The guys were on a team of about 10 and we met up with a few of the other wives while we there. Somehow we talked one of the guys that drives around on the medical off-roader thingy to drive us around.
Seriously, we felt so V.I.P. We thought he would totally deny us since we had a baby stroller, but nope. He was all like, “Come on, I’ll take you anywhere you want to go!”
We were able to ride with him and see the guys do ten of the obstacles. We probably would have only seen about 5 obstacles if we wouldn’t have had the V.I.P. service.
This was the face that I got from my husband about 1/3 of the way through the race. I think he may have been second guessing his decision to do this.
They had to ensue the “Arctic Enema” which was 80,000 gallons of ICE COLD water. They had to submerge themselves. Head under the water and all.
I’m pretty sure a few of the guys thought this obstacle was one of the worst. Including my husband, who almost blacked out after he climbed out.
Talk about putting your body in to shock. Yep, I never want to CHOOSE to do that either.
Another obstacle that I would have never survived….”Everest”.
You had to run up this huge {slippery I might add – laced with baby oil} wall. The only way to get completely up was to be grabbed by people at the top and have them help pull you up.
Kelly saw 3 people dislocate their shoulder in a matter of 5 minutes.
Again, am I missing the fun in this???
Other obstacles included getting shocked {no thank you}, climbing through underground tunnels {no thank you}, and jumping off a tall cliff like thing in to straight up mud water {definitely no thank you}. Sick.
Men love the weirdest things.
Although don’t be fooled….MANY women participated in this event too.
His shoes weren’t near as bad as I thought they would be. Actually salvageable.
I was pretty proud that these guys all finished and not a single one of them got hurt.
You would think they would get some huge prize at the end, but all they got was a beer and these silly orange headbands.
I don’t think my husband took off his headband for at least 24 hours straight.
I know one thing….I will never be more than a spectator at a Tough Mudder.
Thank-you-very-much.

Looks very…. manly? Ha! No other words to describe it. I’m with you! I could definitely go through life without participating! Although, I did to the Color Run last month and it was a blast! 🙂

My hubby is going to be running this race next summer! It likes like an awesome challenge! My sister just told me about your blog. I, too, am a mother of boys (2 boys, and one baby on the way). I’m excited to follow you. I have a blog as well, am not as dedicated as you, but I’d love for you to check it out!

Good gracious! I’d be a nervous wreck if my husband wanted to do something like that. Glad to hear Jeff had fun and didn’t get hurt. That looks IN-TENSE!

My husband just did Tough Mudder in Michigan! All of us wives went to watch as well and got pretty muddy ourselves…..now the guys keep trying to talk us into doing it with them next year! I think I would be able to handle everything except the parts when they get shocked….yikes!

This is awesome!!! I never thought I’d chose to get dirty either. But I’ve done two mud runs this year and I’m addicted! However, I will never do this one. For one I can’t even run 11 miles let alone do it with obstacles. And ice water and getting shocked…no thanks. Glad no one got hurt and they had such a great time!

Way to go Jeff!! These obstacles look INSANE!! I can’t even imagine!!

I don’t think I’d mind the mud so much, but the pain of the physical challenges definitely discourages me from ever trying something like this. Eventually I want to run a 5k, which I’ve been putting off, but that’s as far as I want to challenge myself. I HATE running!
Good for Jeff though! I envy the people who have the willpower to put themselves through those types of things and actually enjoy it!

Crazy town. I did Warrior Dash, and that was plenty for me! Ha, ha!

I cannot imagine willingly doing that! My neighbor and her husband did it a few months ago. She had a baby a month after I did and I couldn’t believe she put herself through that!

I thought I was tough for doing the Warrior Dash. It was a lot of fun, and a lot shorter than the Tough Mudder. After seeing the pics though, I do think I want to try this at some point. Good job to all who did it.

Oh my goodness, I am so glad none of them got hurt! That is craziness! Some of our friends did one last year, I was worried! 😉 That is so funny and awesome that y’all got to be driven around for a lot of it!

I love this post! One of my best friends did Tough Mudder with her now ex boyfriend. She does crossfit like you! Her ex boyfriend got a tough mudder tattoo!

Your husband kind of looks like the Rock! Is he a cousin or something?
Mandy says
Haha! No he isn’t! But he does get that same comment a lot from people! 🙂
Cate says
This looks like fun, but not that much fun! I will give you more notice the next time we come up.

That looks like it would be pretty intense. I have a son that is also ex-military (he is now a cop) and I could see him doing something like this. I think it probably compares to things that they went through in basic training!
Congrats to your hubby! He looks like he had fun!!

My husband and a group of his Marine buddies are about to do this. I shared your post with them. Thanks! This is something I would never do, but now I will know what I should be taking pictures of! 🙂
Jen @ A Daily Dose of Davis says
Umm…OMG!!! There is no way I could EVER do a race like that!! Ever!! I like races where I can wear tutus and eat chocolate afterwards. This looks hard core. But way to go Jeff!!! He looks like a badass.

I competed in the Tough Mudder this summer and last. As a mom of 3 little boys, I need to keep in tune with their desire to be constantly dirty… And I’m a pretty competitive & adventurous mom. 🙂 My girlfriends & I had a blast competing with other “crazy” people. It was a great experience we’ll do each year!!
