When we woke up on Saturday morning we had 6 MORE inches of snow…on top of the 9 inches we already got. YIKES! I can’t remember the last time it has snowed this much.
We had to get creative with fun activities to keep the boys busy because, let’s be real here, snow is cold. And moms hate the cold. Ok, maybe not all moms, but THIS mommy hates the cold. I know, I’m such a bummer.
I will say that I put on my snow boots, bundled up in three layers, found a pair of my husband’s oversized gloves…and headed out in to the snow like I was born in Alaska or something. Be impressed.
Since that didn’t last longer than an hour it was back to creative indoor activities. Did you know that you can pretend to be a drill sergeant and demand that your kids give you 10? And I don’t mean just 10 push-ups. We went through squats, sit-ups, jumping jacks, burpees, frog jumps, head stands {that one can get interesting}, high-fives, front rolls, flutter kicks…that’s just to name a few.
Unfortunately one of the three boys was under the weather, poor baby SJ. He had a terrible cough, fever, rash, and was wheezing worse than I was comfortable with.
Since it was the weekend and our doctors office wasn’t opened I decided to take him to Urgent Care to get checked out. Thankfully they plowed our roads or it would have made it twice as hard to get there.
I waited a good 2 hours to be seen and when we finally saw a doc they sent us straight to ER. His oxygen levels were lower than they should have been and they told us “he was too sick to treat at Urgent Care”.
Talk about giving a mother a heart attack. Geez.
So we headed to the closest ER and thankfully there was no wait. After a breathing treatment and a chest x-ray they concluded it was just Bronchiolitis and an ear infection. The bronchiolitis was most likely caused from a viral infection {possibly RSV}.
I was glad it wasn’t pneumonia and I was EXTREMELY glad they didn’t want to keep him overnight. He was already getting antsy the 2+ hours we were in the exam room. I couldn’t imagine trying to keep him occupied for any longer than we were already there.
As if one ER visit wasn’t enough for the Rose household this weekend, Bents decided he needed to trump his brother. And trump his brother he did.
Sitting on one of the kitchen bar stools and reaching for a yogurt stick that was on the counter…he fell head first on to the hard wood floor. I watched it all go down and it was one of those moments where I was just far enough away where I couldn’t save him. UGH!
The entire left side of his head swelled up like the size of a tennis ball. I have seen my fair share of bumps, trust me, but this one? This bump was the MOTHER of all bumps.
My husband and I freaked out. Classic, I know. But he was immediately lethargic and could hardly keep his eyes open.
The bump was so big it looked like his head was going to explode. I am not kidding.
We called 911.
They showed up and definitely wanted him to go to the ER. Since there wasn’t much they could do in the ambulance for him they allowed me to drive him. Thankfully because that would have been traumatic for him.
I could barely keep him awake…he kept closing his eyes and it was scaring the crap out of me.
Long story short….he is totally fine. Minus the giant goose egg and bruise he now has on his head. Being the stubborn child he is he didn’t want me to take any pictures of his “boo-boo”. Plus, I was too consumed with making sure he was ok.
These pictures are from about THREE hours after the incident happened and the swelling had gone down A TON! This was about half the size it was when it first happened.
As soon as we arrived back home Bents was back to acting like his wild self. I never knew I would be so happy to see him act like a crazy child, but it was a relief. To say the least.
Can I also just say that I swear I am not that mom that takes her kid to the ER every time something little happens? I am really not. This post may make you think otherwise. Haha! I can laugh about this now {knowing that my children are ok}.
I feel kind of silly for calling 911, but honestly, when you are worried that something bad could be wrong with your child…you will cast the fear of embarrassment aside and do what is necessary.
I don’t regret taking him to the ER. Head injuries are no joke and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
I am pretty sure my heart can take no more stress this weekend! Life with boys is getting REAL interesting these days.
You know things happen in 3’s right? Should I be worried P is next?

I am glad both boys are okay. i had my oldest son fall off a stool on to tile floor at the in-laws house one time we were visiting. I was so scared. I hope SJ feels better and I hope Bents goose egg heals up nicely. {hugs} to you all!

Wow! It’s one thing to have a sick child but then to see one fall and bump their head is quite terrifying!!! Especially when you see it happening and can’t get there in time. I would have totally freaked and reacted the same, if not worse! Hopefully, all are starting to feel better (including you)!

How scary! Glad they are both ok. I cannot imagine that bump being any bigger. Wow!

I am glad that they both are ok. I know when your babies are sick or injured it can be very scary especially with head injuries and breathing/lung issues. And it is always better to be safe than sorry.
We had more than our fair share of accidents in our house when the kids were younger. From asthma to cuts and bruises to fractured arms to 60 plus stitches, we made a few trips to the ER. They all three survived, but gave me more than a few gray hairs in the process!

Head injuries are no joke girl! Stay on top of those! (I’m sure you’ve seen the recurring articles regarding concussions and high school, college, and pro football). You were right on in how you responded… Yes, and we’ve glued our oldest once, stitched him up twice, and we just had to glue the chin of one of the twins a month or so ago 🙂
I’m just holding on for the ride :0

I am so happy to hear it was nothing to serious with Bents! I am also glad to you him in right away. We had a young girl 10 years old pass away this past week from a sledding injury. She was thrown from her sled and hit her head but appeared to be ok. They took her inside and everything was ok until it wasn’t and by the time the ambulance came she had passed away. It is AlWAYS better to be paranoid and getting things checked right away then to hesitate. I pray from a momma of boys as well that they heal up fast and give you a little more of a break between hospital visits 🙂

So glad that both boys are fine! Good for you for calling 911. It is much better to act on the safe side. Hope you have a peaceful week!

So glad that they’re better!! Every time one of my brothers or I ended up in the hospital, it seemed that another one of us would too!

What an eventful weekend at the Rose house! SO glad both boys are ok!
We have only had one trip to the ER with our kids and it was a head injury trip. 5 hours and a CT scan and we found out Brody was ok. It’s scary when it’s your baby. I hope your week is way less eventful! 🙂

Glad everyone is ok! I would have done the same thing – head injuries are very scary! Here’s hoping your week is much less exciting! 🙂

Eeeek! His poor head looks painful 🙁 And I agree- head injuries should definitely be taken to the ER, you just never know! My dad’s fiance fell about a month ago and then blew it off. She had a migraine for a couple of weeks straight and he finally forced her to go to the ER, turned out she had bleeding around her brain and went in for immediate brain surgery. Scary!!
Viviana says
I knew exactly what kind of bump you were talking about before I even scrolled down to see the photo of your poor baby! My brother got elbowed playing basketball on the side of the head and he got the same bump and it was huge!
Very scary. Of course he was not lethargic or about to pass out. That is an immediate sign to go to the ER because of possible brain trauma. How scary!
I am so glad both your babies are ok.

Nothing wrong with going to the ER or calling 911. Wheezing and head injuries are both super serious. Glad everyone’s ok!

Oh my you poor thing!!! I can’t even imagine how big it was when it first happened! Glad everyone is doing ok!

I would have done the same thing with both boys. Some parents wait…When someone hits their head like that. They say you have a “Golden hour” and, with your little one., I would have def taken him to the ER. I have done that and was so glad I did. Your a great mom.
I hope both boys are feeling better.
Happy New Year,
Cathy

I’m so glad your boys are ok! There’s nothing scarier than having to take ur child to the hospital. I have a six month old son and we had to spend his first Christmas in Children’s Hospital due to Bronchiolitis from RSV, along with a partially collapsed lung. We were there for 6 days but he is home and doing well now. Hope the New Year brings lots of HEALTH to you and your family!
Jennifer says
I think you are a great mom for taking them to the ER. My son has had knots on his head, but never acted lethargic. Lethargic behavior worries me, especially coming from busy boys! Glad they are okay!

Mandy, OH MY!!! Poor baby SJ 🙁 Is he doing better now? What happened to your other little one who got a goose egg on his head? I am telling you BOYS are ALWAYS getting into something!!! My little guy is only 14 months and already getting himself into trouble, bumps, bruises, rough housing…where do they learn this? It must be in their nature?! lol Well, I really hope all of your sweet family stays healthy and safe in 2013!!!
