I’ve had this OLD and ugly (and not so great quality) black entertainment center since college.
Oh yes, the good ole college days. The days when “quality” furniture is only something you saw on tv…or at your parents house. Heck…I remember back in those days when it didn’t matter if your furniture even matched. It was just nice to have furniture at all, right?
And don’t worry, mine didn’t match.
But now that I’m all grown up (sorta), I kinda prefer my furniture to AT LEAST match.
Call me crazy.
Unfortunately, somehow…this not-so-lovely entertainment center has made the final cut in our current home a whole 9 years later? Don’t even ask me why. I couldn’t answer that.
We have this “extra” space in our living room and honestly…the dumb black entertainment center fit perfectly.
Wouldn’t-cha-know-it!
So, we kept it. And now…if I’m being honest…I don’t even hate it anymore.
Probably because I was able to surround it with this…
I found these candle holders at Hobby Lobby on clearance.
I’m loving everything about this style of picture frame right now. I could have bought 10 more, but I figured things are cooler in moderation. Yea?
The lamp is something I had in the closet and I wasn’t using. I think it works in the space and it’s neutral enough to go with my other lamps.
I see a little dust on there. Don’t judge.
See. Ugly entertainment center turned pretty.
And I think a GIANT canvas in ANY space will make your heart happy.
EXCEPT when said giant canvas only involves 4 out of the 5 members of your family. Crap.
Yea, we are still working on a new picture to replace that, but a 40×60 canvas ain’t cheap.
I wil say that I think the canvas takes the focus off the entertainment center. No?
After I posted this, the lovely Richella from Imparting Grace had the best idea. She thought in order to hide my dvd’s and the things behind the glass…add some fabric! Genius!
I even used fabric I already had laying around the house! I love how it hides the cluttered dvd’s!
*Sorry for the difference in picture quality. These last pics were taken in the evening without my natural light.

Our house is definitely still a mix of things we’ve slowly bought on our own + hand-me-downs from our parents. Even if that piece is from college you have a way of making it look great! ๐

I second the comment about the wall color – can you please share the color name and brand? Thanks!

I love those candle holders. I am all about the safari decor. I love that you were able to find a home for the college days entertainment center.

I love the way you’ve re-purposed that piece! I think you’ve done a great job of making lemonade out of lemons. . . although that piece is not really ugly at all!
If you ever wanted to hide the things behind the glass, you could attach a pretty piece of fabric to the inside of those cupboard doors. I’m sure you could do a lovely shirred piece, but you could also just staple-gun a rectangle of fabric right to the inside of the doors. Just a thought.
Thanks so much for joining Grace at Home!

Just found your blog through Grace at Home. I have an really ugly — and smaller –brown entertainment center that I’m trying to figure out how to repurpose. Now I’m thinking it might be perfect to hold towels on the bottom of my linen closet!
Thanks for the tips; I’m looking forward to checking out more of your blog!

I think the entertainment center looks perfect there. Especially the way you decorated it. Great job.
